The Otoscope 4

Description : The principle of the dry cell battery was known in the 1860s, however a reliable product was not commonly available until the First World War and was not applied in any routine way to the manufacture of portable otoscopes until the efforts for the war were concluded.

Thus, it was not until the early 1920s that reliable small bulbs and dependable easily obtainable flashlight batteries made the otoscope, as we know it today, a practical proposition.
