Aural Speculae:
Politzer

Description : Politzer, the noted Viennese physician and founder of modern otology, introduced black lucite specula.

He felt that this plastic material was warmer, cheaper and the dark colour provided a better contrast with the tympanic membrane than a brightly polished silver speculum.

This controversy about the internal colour of specula continues to the present day; the present authors prefer a dark interior.
