Hinton's Modification of Toynbee's Illuminating Speculum

Description : James Hinton, the eminent Victorian aurist, added a teaching observer attachment to Brunton's otoscope. This is mirrored in a recently introduced teaching head for a modern American (Welch Allyn) portable otoscope.

Hinton's modification of Toynbee's illuminating speculum which allows both physician and student to see at the same time (from Turnbull 1887 "A Clinical Manual of the Diseases of the Ear").
