A high-powered photomicrograph of a human temporal bone section.

Description : Details of the middle turn of the cochlea are demonstrated.

The three compartments of the cochlea, the scala vestibuli (V), the scala media (M) and the scala tympani (T), can be seen.

The scala vestibuli is separated from the scala media by Reissner's membrane (R).

The stria vascularis (SV) is located on the outer wall of the scala media.

The organ of Corti (OC) is situated upon the basilar membrane (BM).

The tectorial membrane JM) lies upon the top of the outer hair cells of the organ of Corti.

The basilar membrane and the osseous spiral lamina (OSL) divide the scala media from the scala tympani.

The spiral ligament (SL) is seen lateral to the organ of Corti.
